Earlier this month, our South Street Kids led a colourful parade as part of the Norwich Road Celebration. Read more about the event below written by our Youth Support Worker Leyla El-Henawy:
The Norwich Road celebration filled the area with a lease of life and buzz that the community has needed. The young people at South Street Kids spent some Saturday sessions preparing for the parade; which took place from Sir John Mills Theatre to the Baptist Church at the top end of Norwich Road. Community teams bounded together to walk and chant and dance to the beat of the drum players who carried the pace of the parade. Shop keepers and Norwich Road residents flocked out to see what was happening, and gradually as the smiles spread, the celebration only grew greater.
Once the walking had stopped, the area was congregated with an array of people laughing, dancing and sharing praise of the wonderful atmosphere. Martell Richards Dance troop showcased a street/hip-hop performance, followed by a dance off by anyone brave faced enough to join! The signs made by South Street Kids and Rock Paper Scissors spoke to the area filling it with vibrancy and colour. As time went on the parade made its final stop at The Hive, a community hub in the heart of Norwich Road, where more activities and creative interaction took place. A DJ booth was set up playing an eclectic mix of music and artistic workshops were at The Hive, refreshments provided for all those enjoying the lovely atmosphere.
The day all together left the young people on a high, with everyone showing compassion, joy and love. Celebrating the diversity and culture on Norwich Road gave the area the attention it definitely deserved.
